Filthy Lucre ?

Dear ASKaPUNK-
I think it is a little sellout-ish to have ads on a punk rock / DIY
site like yours. Why do you do it? -WtF

Dear WfT-
Basically I included the ads because I wanted to see what would
happen, and I’ve got news for you: Selling out is a lot harder to do
than you might think.

Last time I checked my google “adsense” ads had, in the past year and
a half, earned me a whopping grand total of $1.87 …and since the
frugal folks at Google only pay out when you’ve accumulated at least
one hundred dollars in your account, I’m guessing I’ll see my first
check of filthy lucre sometime around the year 2060. Of course,
between now and then the costs of domain registration/renewal will far
outstrip that $100, so the current fiscal models we have floating around the corporate offices here at ASKAPUNKdotCOM have us functioning comfortably in the black sometime around….oh…. NEVER.

Please continue your efforts to keep it real and stick it to the man,
but yeeeesh, try to get a little better at picking your targets.

Strictly to play devil's advocate--

Given the fact that selling adspace is such a moral dilemma that you had to agonize over before you arrived at the decision, and that you've earned $1.87 in 18 months, is that worth giving up your principles?

I am just observing, not judging. I'd sell adspace in a heartbeat if I thought it would make me some $$$. Doesn't bother me at all. ;)

Hey Thor - Thanks for reading and I don't feel judged at all. I always welcome any and all comments. The only ones I haven’t posted in the past year+ were the obviously malicious or unhinged ones. Of course that shines a light on how few comments I’ve gotten so far – but hey, the numbers are starting to pick up.

I think what is most interesting about your comment is that it serves as a reminder that everything we write, in blogs or emails etc is open to wide interpretation. I vaguely remember reading something about a study done re: Email… something like half the respondents admitted that they misunderstood emails that were sent to them, but those same people were convinced that all the messages they sent OUT were clearly and unambiguously written…

…and so I’m left to wonder how my seemingly angst-free sentence: “ Basically I included the ads because I wanted to see what would happen” could somehow be interpreted by readers as “a moral dilemma” that I “agonized over” unless of course you were joking.
